Privacy Policy

Brendan McCormack ("Tryal", "we," "us," or "our") operates the Tryal mobile application (the "App"). This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding that information.

1. Information We Collect

Account information: email address, date of birth (used only to verify age eligibility), and username.
Content you create: videos, images, captions, and reactions you post to the App.
Viewing and engagement data: which posts are shown to you, how long you watch them, and your likes, reactions and shares. We use this to run Tryal's testing system (deciding which posts survive) and to build your feed.
Camera, microphone and photo library: used only when you choose to record, import, or save a video. We receive only the videos you post.
Captions and editing: the AI editor analyzes your video's audio and speech on your device using Apple's on-device speech recognition to create captions and cuts. Your audio is not uploaded for this.
Phone number (optional): if you add it, we store only a one-way cryptographic hash of it, never the number itself. Your number is not verified.
Contacts (optional): if you allow access, we read only the phone numbers in your contacts (not names or emails) and store only one-way hashes of them, never the numbers themselves.
Device and error information: device model, app version, and error reports, used to fix crashes and problems.

We do not collect more personal information than is necessary to operate Tryal's core features.

2. How We Use Your Information

To create and maintain your account
To operate core app features (feed, reactions, notifications)
To test your posts with viewers and decide whether they survive
To keep your posts away from people you know while they are being tested. We use your phone number and contacts (if you provide them) and your "Hide my posts from" list only for this. We never show your number or contacts to anyone, never use them to suggest friends or tell you which contacts use Tryal, and never use them for advertising.
To enforce our age requirements and content moderation policies
To respond to support requests
To comply with legal obligations

We do not sell your personal information to third parties.

3. Teen Users (Ages 13–17)

Tryal requires all users to be at least 13 years old. Users who indicate they are between 13 and 17 years old have additional protections:

Content marked as "mature" by its creator is automatically filtered out of their feed and is not shown to them.
We do not knowingly allow targeted advertising based on the personal information of users under 18.

4. Third-Party Services

Tryal uses the following third-party services to operate:

Supabase (database, authentication, and file storage) — your account data, posted content, and media files are stored on Supabase's infrastructure.
Expo (app updates and push notification delivery) — receives your device's push notification token so we can send you notifications.
Apple (Sign in with Apple, push notifications, and on-device speech recognition).

These providers only process your data to the extent necessary to provide their services to us and are not permitted to use your data for their own purposes.

5. Data Retention and Deletion

Posts that do not survive testing are removed from the App and their video files are deleted. Posts that survive stay on your profile until you delete them.

You can remove your phone number and contacts data at any time in Settings.

You may permanently delete your account at any time from Settings → Delete Account. When you do:

Your profile, posts, reactions, likes, phone number hash, and contact hashes are permanently deleted from our database immediately.
Associated media files (videos/images) are permanently deleted from our storage within 30 days.
This action cannot be undone.

6. Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have the right to access, correct, or request deletion of your personal information. To exercise these rights, contact us at brendanmccormack2025@gmail.com.

7. Children's Privacy

Tryal is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under 13, we will delete it promptly.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify users of material changes through the App.
